Prostate cancer veterans and supporters from all over the United States will be climbing 19,400‘ Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in September 2003 on behalf of the Second
Hap Weyman Memorial Prostate Cancer Climb. Their goal is to raise $1 million for
prostate cancer awareness and education, they will be asking for pledges from individuals, community supporters and business donors. The climb will encourage men and their loved ones to learn more about preventative measures, early detection, treatment options, and the proactive measures available to insure prostate health.
Ken Malik, a participant in the 2001 Prostate Cancer Climb on Mt Aconcagua in the Argentine Andes, will spearhead the event on behalf of the Prostate Awareness Foundation, a non-profit organization that furnishes objective information about prostate health to men and their families all over the United States. Malik is the co-founder and executive director of the San Francisco based organization.
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to be part of this expedition,” Malik says. “Next year I would like to see more men involved. This is not a walk in the park, it‘s a serious challenge. However, its not a technical climb and anyone in excellent shape can make it to the top”.
PAF (www.prostateawarenessfoundation.org) has helped over 1,000 men and their families this year.
Malik said the Prostate Cancer Climb of Mt Kilimanjaro will be the organization’s primary fundraiser next year. “We want to raise public awareness. Prostate cancer has become an epidemic and will affect one out of three families. Every 90 seconds another American is told he has prostate cancer. It‘s being found in younger and younger men. This year, one of five men diagnosed will be under 60. We want to inspire those men with the disease that there is hope, and show everyone that a rich and rewarding life is possible after diagnosis.”
