HOW TO TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR

Here is a list to follow when consulting with a doctor. 'Doctor' means everyone from a radiation oncologist to a homeopathic practitioner to a Chinese herbalist.

1. Make a list of the questions that you want to ask before you go to your appointment. Begin this list at least one week in advance.
2. Take a pad, a pen and even a tape recorder with you to the appointment.
3. Many of us bring along a loved one or friend, someone who thinks clearly, can ask questions, and get clarification when appropriate. Two heads are better than one.
4. If you're unclear about an issue or not sure what the doctor means (lets face it, lots of this terminology is new to us) ask him or her for clarification.
5. Do not be afraid to ask anything at all. This is your life we're talking about.
6. Ask if the suggested medicine or medical procedure has had clinical trials, and what the results were. Also ask about any side effects, both short and long term. If in doubt, ask for the clinical studies to review before you make your decision. (Some of us bring a self-addressed stamped envelope to make it easier to receive this information promptly).
7. Ask the doctor to refer you to patients of his who have had or used this specific treatment or medication.
