TRIAL RECAP

July 29, 2002 (San Francisco, CA)

Eight members of the Prostate Awareness Foundation (PAF) with prostate cancer recently underwent a three-month trial of a Vietnamese herbal prostate formula to evaluate its effect. The formula has been used by Vietnamese royalty for many years in the treatment of both prostate and ovary problems. The formula is composed of: Crinum Latiforlium, a Southeast Asian water lily; Astragalus membranaceus, a root long known for its immune enhancing properties; Alisma plantago-aquatica, a root used to enhance kidney and liver energy, and balance hormonal levels; Momordica charantia, a fruit used in detoxification that is an anti-tumor and anti-viral; and Carica papaya, a natural digestive enzyme. The herbal formula is configured in a 30:1 concentration.

Ba Hoang, MD, PhD the formulator, reported the following prostate benefits prior to the PAF trial:

¨      Reduction in nocturnal urinary frequency

¨      Reduction in urinary urgency

¨      Reduced incontinence

¨      Reduction in pain relief associated with enlarged prostate (BPH)

¨      Restored sexual function

He reports that the mode of action of this herbal formula is to balance androgen levels and tissue sensitivity to androgens. Dr Hoang also notes the release of blood stasis in prostate tissue, and improvement of cellular energy leading to healthy prostate function. He makes no claims in regard to the products ability to reduce PSA. (He feels that PSA is a controversial subject. And that the PSA may not be a true barometer of prostate health, and can be misleading!). He reported to our group that he has used this formula for over 15 years on over 200 patients with good results. He recommends the use of the formula for all men with prostate health concerns both as a preventative and a therapeutic agent on an ongoing basis.

THE TRIAL:

Participants: 8 men with diagnosed prostate cancer

Parameters:

Not currently on any ADT (Androgen Deprivation Therapy)

Take a PSA test prior to the start of the protocol

Take a PSA test after the protocol is completed

            Supply list of current supplementation

            Complete a post-trial questionnaire

Dosage: 3 capsules, 3 times per day before meals, for 3 months

Trial Results:

            Urine flow:

                        3 improvement

                        5 no observable change

Nocturnal frequency:

                        5 improvement –  3 men reported a decrease from 3 to 2 visits

2 men reported a decrease from 2 to 1 visits

                        3 no consistent change

Energy level:

                        1 obvious improvement

                        7 no observable change

            Erectile function:
1 dramatic improvement – 1 man reported on a return of sexual function after a long term sabbatical

                        1 moderate improvement

                        6 no observable improvement

PSA: There were no major changes to PSA values. 4 men reported a slight increase, 4 men reported a slight decrease in PSA.

Side Effects: There was one report of itchiness that may or may not have been associated with the supplement!

This product is the first to undergo an “informal trial” by PAF. However, we do get feed back on prostate formulas from men all over the country. Healthy Prostate & Ovary appears to have helped a very high percentage of participants reduce their nocturnal urinary frequency, which is very encouraging indeed. Trial supplementation was made available free of charge by Allergy Research Group and can be purchased by calling 800-545-9960.

Dr Ba Hoang also reported that he uses Artemisinin Plus along with Healthy Prostate and Ovary Formula in more severe cases of prostate cancer (men with PSA values over 20) with excellent results. Both supplements are available from Allergy Research Group (ARG).
